Newcastle United F.C.

Most notably, Newcastle United has been one of the most influential projects of Douglas Hall's career. The club was originally bought by his father, Sir John Hall back in 1991.

Alongside his father, Douglas was directly involved in many aspects of the club's business - taking part in many of the club's crucial player signings.Sir John Hall later stepped down as chairman of the club, passing his duties down to Freddy Sheppard and various other activities to his son Douglas, who remained on the board of directors.

Douglas and his father Sir John Hall began the much-needed refurbishment and extension of St. James' Park, they added the Sir John Hall Stand, which is now named Leazes End Stand, transforming the club's stadium and bringing it up to standard with the rest of the Premier League teams.

Douglas steered the club into success with the signing of legendary players and managers. The likes of Kevin Keegan, Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer, Shola Ameobi, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, and Keiron Dyer. The extension and later complete redevelopment of the stands and stadium would cement his legacy in stone.

A success story like few before him, he ended his venture by selling the club to Mick Ashley who sold the club in one of the largest sale deals in history by selling the club to the Saudi-Backed Ownership Group in £305m deal in 2022! This now makes Newcastle United F.C. the largest and richest football club in the world!

Gateshead Metrocentre

Douglas's father, Sir John Hall, was the mastermind behind the ever successful Metrocentre. Located in Gateshead and spearheaded by Hall's development company, Cameron Hall Developments, a northeast icon had emerged. Douglas Hall continued to support his father's project and eventually took over the company. Together with his father, they sold their stake in the Metrocentre to the Church Commissioners.

Metrocentre's construction was financed by the Church Commissioners of England Church Commissioners of England, and was masterminded by Sir John Hall's company, Cameron Hall Developments. The ground upon which it is built was purchased for £100,000 in the early 1970s.

Access to the development was facilitated by an urban development grant from the Department of the Environment, and the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. The first phase of the development, the Red Mall, was opened in April 1986. At the time, it featured a large Carrefour supermarket, which later became a Gateway, and subsequently Asda.

Metrocentre also featured the first out-of-town branch of Marks & Spencer. In August 1987 the MetroCentre railway station, which is connected to the centre via a covered footbridge, was opened by British Rail.

Today the MetroCentre is still one of the largest and most prominent shopping centres in the UK and stands as strong as it ever has bringing prosperity and jobs to the region. Another legacy built from the ground up!
